The COUPLED project (CO₂ Utilization Process via Looping tEchnology Demonstration) has officially kicked off.
Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, COUPLED brings together 15 partners from 7 countries to demonstrate an integrated CO₂-to-fuel process that combines chemical looping, advanced membrane separation, and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis.
The project aims to transform CO₂ into sustainable fuels and contribute to the decarbonization of heavy industry, paving the way for a more circular and climate-neutral economy in Europe.
The kick-off meeting was held on 19 November 2025 in Manchester and hosted by the project coordinator, The University of Manchester.
Partners will collaborate over the next four years to:
- Demonstrate an integrated CO₂-to-fuel process at pilot scale
- Advance innovative CO₂ separation and conversion technologies
- Assess environmental and socio-economic impacts
- Foster knowledge transfer and market uptake
Techfem was proud to attend and present its main activities, focusing on process modeling, digital twin development for real-time monitoring, and assessments to support scale-up and certification. Techfem’s role leverages its experience in smart process systems to drive optimization and sustainability in the demonstration plant.
Together, the COUPLED consortium will showcase a viable pathway to produce low-carbon fuels, accelerate industrial decarbonization, and demonstrate Europe’s leadership in sustainable CO₂ utilization technologies.
